The French Quarter in New Orleans

topic posted Mon, December 18, 2006 - 2:31 PM by  Lobo
I just got back home from the French quarter. I was out there doing a job for a few days with a couple of co-workers. Went into "Desire" an oyster bar, for dinner for the second time and "Patty" the waitress barks out, "YOU ONLY GAVE ME A DOLLAR TIP, YOU ONLY GAVE ME A TWO DOLLAR TIP, AND YOU DID'NT GIVE ME NUTTIN!" My co-worker replies, " It took you twenty minutes to bring us our drinks" to which Patty replies, "That was a $40.00 ticket between the three of you, well maybe in twenty minutes I'll be back to take your order! Then she walked away.

Without saying anything we all looked at each other stood up and walked the hell out of that place.

I would have done the same thing, but not before asking Patty herself to bring the manager to the table. I've been in the biz a long time, and can be very forgiving under some circumstances, but I would have had her job for that. There are far too many hard working servers out there and too many people who need a job they'll appreciate for anyone to have to tolerate behavior like that.

Yea, It was busy that night before. What blows me away was that she remembered a thing like that. I understand that people make their living from recieving tips but come on! Maybe she dos'nt need to be working in the service industry. I think what the thing is, jobs right now are so easy to get in New Orleans. Nobody came back after "Katrina". There are help wanted signs everyware. Burger King is hiring at $11.00 an hour to start.

i am a new orleanian (now living in los angeles... presently packing my bags to go home for the holidays for three weeks.) i worked in the service industry in new orleans. usually, in the quarter, you'd get great service. those people really do work for tips. there is not minimum wage for tipped employees. (at least not the last time i checked.) their tips are EXPECTED to make ends meet. they get angry when they work and get nothing. fifteen persent is what they expect. ten percent if the service is bad, twenty if it is good.

i know that you probably met with some bad attitudes... but please forgive. it's a fucked up place to live right now and most of the people who live and work in the quarter are this far from insane.

actually, there are not enough people to work in the service industry there. restaurants are scheduling days closed because of the work shortage. yes, anyone can get a job there with a pulse. the quality of service is directly related to that. the local spots are shutting down because they can't compete with wendys offering $10.00 per hour. it's really sad.

when i go home, i'll be sure to tip extra big when the service is good. i'll still do %10 for bad service. but never a dollar. servers remember bad tippers and good tippers. they just hate dollar tippers.

See, i tip about 10% if the service is adequate, my average is 15 or 20, I've tipped 30 when I had money and the service was exceptional. If the service is regular bad, then there's no tip -- but once when it was really bad (over two hours between sitting down and getting our food, and then the food was wrong, and the server was incredibly rude all night) I gave a penny tip. See, no tip could mean I forgot, but a penny meant I thought about it and that was what their service was worth. If they need the tips to make ends meet, then frankly, they should at least make sure their service is adequate, or if for some reason it's not, then at least make up for it by being pleasant. A tip is a thank you gift, not a given. And if the fast food chains are offering so much right now, then servers who don't feel like doing the job right could always go and get one there, where tips aren't part of it. EXPECTING 10% for bad service is a little bit presumptuous. If the service was super bad I wouldn't even pay for my meal, let alone tip.

I agree 100%. Tips are a thank you...period. The places I frequent know I'm a good tiper. They also know, when I leave a small tip to make up for it the next time I'm there. I have received apoliges, never excuses...... that's why I go back. Bad service means I don't return (second chance, yes, third, no). Done the penny thing a few times, it works. Server with attitude.... MANAGER NOW!!!!
